REMOTE NOTARIAL DEED: Since April 1st, notaries are allowed to sign a notarized document remotely. This is not compulsory and notaries are free to use this additional tool or not. Consult the steps and application procedures.
CHAMBRE DES NOTAIRES OFFICES: The Chamber's offices are open, but due to the circumstances related to the coronavirus some services are offered remotely. Additional delays apply for requests for searches in Registers of Testamentary Dispositions and Mandates, as well as for requests for a Certificate of Quality and Authenticity.

Verify whether someone is registered as a notary

Why should I check that a person is really a notary?
It is in your best interests to ascertain whether the person you plan to consult actually has a permit to practise as a notary. If they do not, you may receive poor advice and the documents drawn up may be invalid. If this were the case, you would have no recourse to the Chambre des notaires du Québec.

How can I make certain that a person is really a notary?
Use the Find a notary tool and search under the "Search the roll of the Order" tab. Make sure you enter the given name and surname exactly as they appear in the Order's listing or you won't get any results. If despite all these precautions, the search does not produce a result, please contact the Chambre des notaires.

Disciplinary record of a notary
The Find a notary tool does not contain the disciplinary records of notaries or former notaries. To find out more about this subject:

Report someone I suspect of illegally practising as a notary
If you suspect that someone is falsely claiming to be a member of the Chambre des notaires du Québec, it may be a case of illegal exercise of the profession.
