International Union of Notaries

The International Union of Notaries is an international non-governmental organization created to promote, coordinate and develop the functions and activities of notaries throughout the world.

Founded on October 2, 1948, the International Union of Notaries is an international association that brings together the national notary organizations of some 80 countries where this legal institution exists. The Chambre des notaires du Québec is proud to be one of the founding members of this prestigious institution.

Mission of the International Union of Notaries

  • To study law in the field of notarial activities and to work together to coordinate national legislations at the international level.  
  • To study and systematically gather legislation on the civil law notarial institution, which is considered to be an instrument to guarantee judicial security and contractual freedom.
  • To harmonize laws and procedures at the international level.

Activities of the International Union of Notaries

  • Submit practical proposals to national legislators.
  • Share experiences and study the means to facilitate the circulation of documents and increase the legal weight of deeds at the international level.  
  • Cooperate with international organizations to prepare shared agreements or guidelines for judicial matters of notarial competence under the framework of the European Economic Community.
  • Periodically hold a convention, alternating between Europe and the Americas.
  • Participate in various international, national and regional conventions by sending delegates.
