Why choose a notary to perform a civil union or marriage?

The Québec government has extended to notaries the authority to perform civil unions and marriages. Some flexibility has also been awarded to officiating notaries. For instance, unlike clerks, who must perform unions and marriages in a courthouse, notaries can officiate in any place that has been agreed upon with the couple. The couple chooses where the event will take place, but it must be accepted by the officiating notary. There are many options, as long as the venue is appropriately equipped for such a celebration and suited to its solemn nature. Marriage and civil union ceremonies are subject to many rules intended to ensure legality. A notary is a good choice of officiant, especially if a couple wants to know the legal consequences of their commitment and learn more about the possibility of establishing a civil union contract. Notaries are able to answer all these questions.
