What is the purpose of family mediation?

Separating is never easy. When a couple is in crisis, serious misunderstandings may arise. Family mediation is a process that tries to help spouses to resolve their conflicts and reach a fair agreement on the effects of the break-up. In the interest of all family members, a mediator can be involved from the beginning of the break-up if difficulties are foreseen. Family mediation is a more user-friendly alternative than the traditional legal process and much more economical.

Family mediation may also be used when dissolving a civil union, or in cases where spouses are already separated or divorced and want to change their agreement or court order.

Many notaries have developed this expertise as a result of special training and have been professionally certified to act as family mediators.
